Things to do in Manly

Take a ferry trip to the city, swim the famous Manly beach, take a stunning walk on the harbour foreshore through Sydney Harbour National Park, shop and dine along the Corso and watch the sharks being fed at Oceanworld.

History of Manly

Manly was named after the noble and manly stature of the local male Aborigines by Captain Arthur Phillip who was on one occasion speared by one in the shoulder. It was first settled by Europeans in 1810 and in 1877 suburban subdivision started. An early settler, Henry Gilbert Smith, named Manly's famous Corso after a street he knew in Rome and in the 1850s he started the first ferry service to the city, built a hotel and subdivided the area. He also planted Manly's trademark Norfolk pines.

Landmark in Manly

Sydney Harbour National Park offers public access to some stunning harbour foreshore walks. Manly's main beach is has three areas, Manly Beach, North Steyne and Queenscliff, each with a surf club. Nearby North Head has great views of Sydney Harbour. Oceanworld is an aquarium just west of the ferry terminal which features daily shark feedings. Just a short walk from Manly Beach is Fairy Bower with its large waves, and Shelley Beach, and the surrounding Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve are great for scuba diving. The historical Manly Quarantine Station is part of Sydney Harbour National Park and guided tours are available.

Convenient to most holiday apartments are Manly's shops, which line the Corso, span fashion, gifts, galleries and antiques. The closest shopping centre, Warringah Mall at Brookvale, is 4km away and is one of the largest in Australia.

Manly's Corso is also the dining hub of the suburb boasting 70 cafes and restaurants to suit a variety of tastes and budgets. Manly also hosts an annual food and wine festival, A Taste of Manly.

Popular activities in Manly include swimming, sailing and scuba diving and for walking tracks with great views head to the Sydney Harbour National Park. Manly's sporting facilities include rugby league, tennis, bowls, cricket, yacht and surf clubs and a swimming pool.

Manly has a ferry service and a faster jet cat service to Circular Quay in the CBD and bus services to the city, the Northern Beaches, North Sydney and Chatswood. There is also a Manly-Warringah Airport Shuttle for airport transfers

Manly is 14km northeast of the Sydney CBD and it is just half an hour by ferry or 15 minutes by Jet Cat from Circular Quay.
