Newport makes a great base for those wishing to enjoy the tranquil, wide expanses of Pittwater. The waterway is perfect for swimming, sailing and fishing.

History of Newport
Pittwater was first discovered by European settlers in 1788. The area was named by Governor Arthur Phillip after the British Prime Minister at the time, William Pitt the Younger. The peninsula on which Newport stands was firstly used as an agricultural area and as a new port for steamers operating on Pittwater, which is how Newport derived its name.
Over time the Newport area became a popular holiday destination for people from Sydney and following the closure of sand mining operations in the area, the peninsula on which Newport sits, became a largely residential area.

Newport is on the shores of Pittwater, a large, shallow waterway that has been a favoured holiday destination for decades. Flanked along its shore by exclusive and scenic communities including Paradise Beach, Palm Beach and Church Point, Pittwater is an important coastal waterway containing diverse aquatic life and stunning scenery.
Newport is also home to one of Sydney's most famous pubs, the Newport Arms. Known for having one of the most scenic beer gardens in Australia, the Newport Arms draws thirsty patrons from all over Sydney's northern beaches.

Newport is close to the junction at which Metroad 3 and Metroad 8 meet, making it an easily accessible destination from the Central Coast, Hunter, or Sydney's west. Frequent buses services connect to the city, Manly, North Sydney and Neutral Bay.
