Things to do in Sydney-Northern Beaches

The northern coastal suburbs known collectively as the northern beaches boast some of Sydney's best surfing and stretch from Manly up to Palm Beach. Manly has a beach on one side and a sandy cove on the other, as well as harbor views, a ferry wharf, aquarium, and shopping and dining strip. Palm Beach in contrast, is the unspoiled, up-market beachside suburb made famous as the filming location of Aussie TV soap, Home and Away. In between there is Dee Why and Narrabeen, Avalon and Newport with their great beaches, rock pools, lakes, parks, reserves and walking tracks. North of that is Pittwater with its lovely waterways in which to sail, scuba dive and wind surf or fish.

History of Sydney-Northern Beaches

Manly was named Manly Cove in 1788 by Captain Arthur Phillip because of the confidence and manliness displayed by the Aborigines in the area and settlement began in the 1820s. It was also the first of the northern beaches suburbs to be settled and in the 1850s a pier was built and a ferry service to Manly established. Further north, however, villages that had been established between the headlands remained small until a tramline was established and bridges built in the early 1900s. Holiday homes and tourism first spurred settlement but the suburbs only became residential after the Second World War with shops and businesses following in the 70s.

Landmark in Sydney-Northern Beaches

At Manly you can visit its famous beach, its Oceanworld aquarium or take a walk along the foreshore through Sydney Harbour National Park. Dee Why also has great beaches and a rock pool while beachside Narrabeen also has Narrabeen Lakes, a great place to spot water birds and take part in water activities. Newport, meanwhile, is home to the popular Sydney pub the Newport Arms. On the peninsula dividing Palm Beach and Pittwater is the Barrenjoey lighthouse.

Shopping in Sydney-Northern Beaches

Manly's Corso is lined with boutiques, galleries and antique shops and nearby Warringah Mall Shopping Centre also has masses of shops and a cinema. Further north Dee Why, with its new promenade, has more than 200 specialty shops. On the waters edge of Narrabeen Lake is a monthly Saturday morning market while Palm Beach has an exclusive shopping area overlooking the beach at the Cabbage Tree complex.

Restaurants & Cafes in Sydney-Northern Beaches

Manly has around 70 restaurants and cafes, many on its beachfront and close to most holiday apartments. Gourmet dining and stylish beach cafes are also found at Dee Why along its new promenade and at Palm Beach at the Cabbage Tree complex.

Sports & Fitness in Sydney-Northern Beaches

Popular water sports in this coastal area include swimming, sailing, diving, windsurfing and fishing and of course surfing. Manly beach hosts many world-class surf events and also has walking tracks, rugby clubs, yacht, surf life saving, tennis, bowls and cricket clubs. Dee Why Park is a popular spot for soccer and its rock pool offers family friendly swimming while Narrabeen Lakes is popular for sailing, windsurfing and kayaking. Surf life saving clubs can be found at Avalon, North Curl Curl and Dee Why and golf greens in the region include Narrabeen's beachside Long Reef Golf Course and Cromer Golf course. Pittwater is the starting point for the Pittwater to Coff's Harbour Yacht race in January.

Real Estate & Design in Sydney-Northern Beaches

High-rise buildings and furnished apartments now dominate the Manly foreshore and Dee Why has also recently been redeveloped with a new promenade and apartment blocks along the beachfront. Palm Beach in contrast, remains comparatively undeveloped with holiday houses and beautiful beachside residences dotted among the bushy slopes that surround the beach. Manly offers executive rental properties just a short ferry ride to the Sydney CBD and some beach houses. Popular areas are: Manly, Dee Why, Narrabeen, Newport, Avalon, Whale Beach, Palm Beach and Pittwater.

Manly Hospital and Mona Vale Hospital are the main hospitals in the region. There are numerous primary and secondary schools throughout the region.
